Mycological Profile Of Infectious Keratitis In Tertiary Care Hospital Of Patna, Bihar.

  Abstract :

Introduction: Fungal infections of the eye could lead to disastrous sequelae, resulting in visual disability. It is important to know the exact etiology of such infections to institute appropriate therapy in time.Aims and Objective: To evaluate the incidence of fungi isolated from various infections of eye in and around Patna, Bihar.Materials and Methods: A total of 173 patients with a clinical diagnosis of fungal infections of the eye were investigated over a period of Two years six months years (2016-2019). These included patients with keratitis, corneal abscess, endopthalmitis, panopthalmititis, corneal scraping/swabs were subjected to direct examination by 10% KOH mount, Gram stain and were inoculated on Sabourauds dextrose agar. Identification of fungi was done by conventional methods.Result: Fungi could be demonstrated by microscopy in 44.5% patients. The commonest isolates were Aspergillus spp. and Fusarium spp.Conclusion: This study highlights the importance of looking for fungi in infection of the eye as appropriate use of antifungal drugs could result in saving the eyeball of the patients.
